Cara Tiemens (’14) To Become A Ryerson Ram Next Fall

Cara Tiemens (5’10”, PG, Country Day School, 2014) of Newmarket, ON has announced that she has elected to attend Ryerson University in Toronto, ON next Fall and play with the Rams in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics).

“I mean it’s sad to be leaving high school and my team because my school goes from [Junior Kindergarten] to Grade 12, so I’ve been playing with some of the teammates since Grade 6,” said a reflective Tiemens, who attends Country Day Private School in King City, ON.

She also went on to say, “I’m really excited,” about finally making her decision. “There’s a lot of pressure off.”

Tiemens is a soft spoken, unassimung Point Guard that had excelled during last year’s rep season with Blues-JUEL (Scarborough, ON). She has caught many defenders off guard, north and south of the border, with her skill which is usually exemplified through her ability to shoot and make sound decisions. She uses her good length to increase her ability to convert on fast breaks, yet in a half-court setting, has shown she can be quite patient waiting for the a play to develop.

She was sought after by several universities, and named the St Mary’s Huskies (Halifax, ON) and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (Waterloo, ON) as her other top choices.

This past summer, Tiemens played on the inaugural GTA Junior Rams travel team, run by the Ryerson Coaching staff, where Cara made a connection with them, which played a role in her making the decision she did.

“I have worked a lot with Carly (Clarke) and Kait (Taylor-Asquini), so I have a really good relationship with them. And also, the athlete support program [at Ryerson] is really good,” she explained about her decision.

The lure of being able to get into an exclusive Psychology program the downtown Toronto University offers, was also cited as one of deciding factors for wanting to become a Ram.

With her rep team season right around the corner, there are a couple of adjustments that she will be looking to tinker with in order to fit the overall vision that Ryerson has in mind for her.

Aside from looking to have her shooting percentage continue to inch upwards and to tighten up on her defense, the Blues Coaches Andrew Bergant and Cameron Hall will be looking to accommodate a position shift that will see Tiemens perform more off-Guard duties.

“I’m really excited for the JUEL season this year,” she said about the rep season that kick-off in January.

“Last year I played Point Guard. And this year I’m playing more of a 2/3 because we’ll have a lot of Point Guards this year. And at Ryerson, they want me to play a 2/3, so I’m looking to more to run the lanes and stuff.”

With the Country Day Cyclones, Tiemens enjoyed 3 straight CISAA (Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association) Tier 2 titles, and fell short in last month’s Conference Finals.

She will be looking to bring those winning ways to the Rams in her quiet, confident and calculated way.
