Hannah Currie (6’0″, G/F, Collingwood, 2013) has committed to attend the University of New Brunswick of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) region in the Fall of 2012.

“I’m super excited to go. I was obviously nervous committing so far out east, so far away from home”, said Currie with only the slightest of apprehensions of leaving her Collingwood, Ontario home and attending the Fredericton, New Brunswick University. “But the environment they they brought me into when they were looking at me was a great environment, great girls, great Coaches. Everything there just seemed so homely and it was a good choice.”

Currie brings a good size with her to the next level, along with a nose for getting to the basket accompanied with a decent looking shot.

The Guard/Wing is coming off of a High School season where her Collingwood Collegiate Fighting Owls, fell in the Georgian Bay Secondary Schools Association district title game, forcing them to just miss out on the right to represent their region at Ontario High School Championships (OFSAA).

Knowing that she will need to continue to refine her skills in preparation for the big jump she will be making to play basketball at the post-secondary level, she had to make a sacrifice. She decided to leave the Collingwood Trailblazers rep team that she had played with for several seasons, and has opted to join Coach Todd Smith and the Barrie Royals JUEL team this season to play in a league that houses many of the best players in the country.

Getting used to the size, pace of the game and the skill set that she will be facing game in and game out, was a choice that was one that she felt was necessary to make. To her is is important to be exposed to the learning curve, in order to accommodate the role she feels she will be asked to fill while playing for the Varsity Reds.

“My height does help down low, as well as mismatches and that kind of thing. I’m definitely looking forward to being able to play any position they can put me into, so that’s pretty much what [playing JUEL] is all for. Whatever they want me to do I’m willing to do it for them.”

Currie will be looking to Major in Sociology and perhaps Minor in Criminology.

Sure, she considered attending other schools in order to continue her studies. She could have even extended the decision-making process a little bit longer. But at the end of the day, she felt a connection with UNB, the first school to really show interest.

“Compared to other places, they were basically the first to get me going through the process. They flew me out and got me to see everything. I got to see the town, I got to stay with all the girls. It was really just a great experience for me because it made it so much easier to choose. I could have waited out a little bit longer as I did have a couple other choices, but honestly, it just came to a point where I was like ‘This is for me, this is the best fit’.”
