2012 Humber HS Classic: Westdale Gold; St Anne’s Silver; Waterloo Bronze

On October 20, 2012, the Westdale Warriors defeated the St Anne’s Saints by a score of 37-27 to claim the 2012 Humber College High School Classic Girls Basketball Tournament Championship.

The low scoring game was truly a back and forth affair for both teams that were playing their fourth game in 2 days. No team lead by more than 2 points until the Warriors started to pull away at the beginning of the Fourth Quarter.

Enough can’t be said about the all around game of a player that caught my eye time and time again, Westdale’s Nicole Morrison (5’5″, PG, 2013). Under the direction of Warrior’s Coach, Nadia Flynn, Morrison was instrumental in leading her team to close out the game on a 14-4 run to seal the win. The steady shooting hand of Alexis Spadafora (5’9″, F, 2013) was a nice compliment to Morrison’s play throughout the tourney and the title is evidence. Spadafora came through repeatedly with a big shot, just when it seemed Westdale needed one.

The Saints were forced to do a lot of patch work to their lineup because of injuries to key starters Amanda Milanis (5’5″, PG, 2014), who suffered a leg injury in their second game, and a head injury to Marissa McNaughton (5’5″, PG, 2014) in the third game. St Anne’s starting Small Forward, Meighen Boyd (5’10”, F, 2013), was forced to run the Point Guard position. As a result, less than the normal number of shots for the normally steady 3-point shooter who was tasked with doing a lot of the ball handling and creating for her team. Boyd played the role well, and The Saints had other players step up including Amber Berchard (5’8″, G/F, 2013) and Alana Gyemi (5’9″, F, 2013), until the fatigue of using a shortened bench started to set in.

Bronze Medal Game Quick Summary

In the Third place matchup, the Waterloo Vikings defeated General Amherst Bulldogs by a score of 42-38 to claim the tournament’s Bronze Medals. Lindsay Taylor had the hot hand for the Vikings, coming alive in the Second Half, scoring 15 Second Half points, 18 in total to lead all scorers.

The Bulldogs led 27-21, and were seemingly in the driver’s seat late in the Third before the Vikings went on their 19-9 run.

The Vikings, the tournament’s 2011 winners, had dropped their earlier Semi-Final matchup to St Anne’s, while the Bulldogs fell to Westdale in their Semi-Final.
