2014 SLAM Winter Challenge Standouts

Published

on

On the weekend of December 27-28, 2014, the Champlain Cavaliers held host to their annual SLAM Winter Challenge in Montreal, QC. This event involved 8 teams in total, 5 from the province of Quebec and 3 from Ontario, as a way for some of the top teams Ontario and Quebec teams to prepare for the return to their respective leagues.

The following are just a few of the many players that stood out:

2015

Ashley Milhomme
After not seeing Milhomme for quite sometime as she needed time to recover from not one, but two ACL surgeries, it was refreshing to see her back on her grind. Ashely 2.0 is now quicker, more confident and a continual threat to attack the basket. The Quarterback of the Nomades’ offence caused fits for the defences that she faced this weekend. She consistently carved them apart by first creating separation in transition with good ball handling in tight spaces and minimizing turnovers. On the other side of the ball she forced several herself, stealing the ball by choosing her spots to attack the ball. Milhomme is certainly in the conversation of the best of the remaining uncommitted PGs left in Canada.

Roxanne Bouliane-Douaire
After a transfer that forced her to sit out the first portion of this season, Bouliane-Douaire was on the court for the first time in game action since the Summer travel season. It is obvious that she will still need some time to get back to game speed. Add to that, the fact that she is with a team whose players she will need to get used to, and you see that she will have her work cut out for her in order to be all that she can be in 2015. That being said, it doesn’t hurt that she will have recent Clemson commit, Sirah Diarra to play with making the duo a serious inside-outside threat. Bouliane-Douaire does have the tools in order to get the job done in terms of a very accurate shot and a level of creativity in order to get her shot off. When she gets her game legs under her, it would be a bonus for her to add some speed and an increased ability to create for others.

2016

Alesia Barrett

Alesia Barrett
Barrett did a good job helping to manage Guard duties by bringing quite a bit of athleticism and competitiveness. Her decision making at times led her into some dubious situations, but the raw skills that she is able to bring to the table is a appealing. Speed, leaping ability and strength are definite pluses in her corner, and at a decent 5’8”, universities may want to take note to see how things turn out.

Meaghan Chin
The ‘Welcome Sight For Sore Eyes Award’ goes to Meaghan Chin, who has been off the court since February 2014 due to an ACL tear. Chin had many of her basketball instincts put to the test this weekend and it shows that playing again for her is like riding a bike. Of course it will take some time for her to get her explosion back to where it was, and to be able to change directions and cut with or without the ball, but what was shown was encouraging. There was a bit of a collective sigh in the gym when she went knee on knee with an opponent while Chin was setting a screen, but she emerged seemingly unscathed, returning to the level of play that she was at, and not missing a shift for the remainder of the game. Look for Meaghan to return and excel from her current Top 20 ranking in the Class of 2016 as she returns to full form.

Caroline Task
Task was asked to cover much more of the Vanier PG workload, due to an injury to teammate Mariane St. Laurent, their premiere Point Guard at the end of their first game of this showcase. Although short in stature, Task has quite a motor that helped to create favorable situations for her squad. When the time was right, Task proved that she could help to stretch the defence by nailing at least two 3-pointers in each of their games and upped her scoring contribution in St. Laurent’s absence by scoring 12 against Ottawa and 17 against North Toronto. Should St. Laurent be away for an extended period of time, Task will likely factor in quite a bit to the execution of their half court sets.

2017

Maurane Corbin

Maurane Corbin
Although Corbin is a towering presence at 6’4”, she possesses some skill which includes a soft shooting touch. I was pleased to see her hitting a short corner set shot with relative ease, and even going as far as to also connect on a 3-pointer or two as well. Her back to the basket game is continuing to come along, although is still some ways off where it would put it in the ‘high level’ category. So what is the next step in her evolution process? Toughness and a competitive fire. A player in her position can never have enough of these traits, and they will greatly help her success on the floor.

Delphine St Cyr-Robitaille
St Cyr is a slender built, Wing player, who first caught our attention back when she was playing with the Tornades de Longueuil. It was good to know that she has combined to add to her skills inventory by handling the ball far more than she did back then. She handled a lot of the Point Guard duty for the Lynx this weekend, although she may have been better served if she was on the receiving end of a PG’s creativity. Connecting well from long range is St Cyr’s forte as the North Toronto Huskies realized when she connected with four 3-pointers in the second half. Her speed and strength will need to be focal points in her training going forward, but she does possess enough right now to be put on the radar of any university in need of a sharp shooter.

Julie Brosseau
Brosseau is a smart player that seems to play the Guard position with ease. She displayed a very good natural instinct for the development of plays and fit right in with a very talented Momo team. Although I would like to see Brosseau’s mobility continue to improve, there is quite a lot of things to love about her game already, including the ability to get very hot behind the 3-point line. All 12 of her points in their game vs Ottawa from behind the arc with a smooth shooting stroke from a set position.
