With Canadian basketball on the rise, there is never a dull moment when it comes to our annual Canadian Labour Day rankings. Our rankings this year is all the more important especially in the Ontario region with the upcoming changes to the basketball landscape with the introduction of the Ontario Prep league and it’s likely impacts on both the already established high school and JUEL rep leagues.

In an effort to look past the hype and zero in on abilities, here’s how things panned out in our latest ranking update:

Class of 2017

There was a slight change on the top of the Senior Class for the moment with Alyssa Jerome receiving the nod at top of the table. In a virtual pick ‘em situation with Hailey Brown, the nod went to Jerome because of her versatility in being able to play a number of positions, and do so and the level she has been able to do so. Both players opted to devote themselves to the Canadian National program, representing their country at both the U17 and U18 levels at the FIBA Worlds and FIBA Americas respectively.

Shaina Pellington is peaking at just the right time. Whether you call it increased strength skill, confidence or a combination of the three, in just a short while, Pellington has made the most of each opportunity she has had to demonstrate her high level ability. While Tamara Farquhar has been showing that her arguably best in class athleticism proves that she is 100% recovered from her ACL injury and Mael Gilles has been improving on her perimeter play, the Class of 2017 has a lot to offer at the high end of the scale

Class of 2018

A change has been made at the top of the Class of 2018 as well. Keishanna Washington’s quiet confidence and ability to create for others and ability to finish when she sees daylight, in our eyes, has earned top ranking.

A new name has started to emerge out of the Montreal, QC area by the name of Andrea Torres. She has a lot of tools that force the need to callout that she is one of the biggest sleepers in this Class.

Class of 2019

Laeticia Amihere and her continued progress has been nothing short of great this summer. She has rightfully earned all of the high level interest that she has been garnering to this point. The high school Sophomore continued to make a name for herself this summer, putting in work while very much underaged on both the Canadian National U17 team, and with Team Ontario at the Nike Chicago event in early July.
The second and third ranked players in the class, happen to be Point Guard this year. Micah Dennis is a good play maker that has the ability to defend while Aerial Wilson brings lots of skill with her to the third ranked position in 2019.

Class of 2020

Merissah Russell tops our list in the Freshmen Class this year. Russell is taking on all comers with the ability to take on defenders 1-on-1 and find great success. She was a major contributor to the Ottawa Nationals’ success this Spring in the JUEL League and continued to find ways to lift Team Ontario, all while a couple of years younger than her competition.
