Canada Overcomes Early Mexican Threat in FIBA Americas Semi
On June 28, 2015 the U16 Canadian Women’s National Team won their FIBA Americas semi-final game against hosts Mexico, by a convincing 70-42 score.
The game played in Puebla, Mexico, saw 2017 standout, Alyssa Jerome lead the charge with a 16 point, 16 rebound effort.
The game started out extremely close. It saw the Canadians claiming a thin 27-24 lead after the first quarter, after managing to climb out of the deficit they were in throughout. From then on in, the host Mexicans were held to single digits in scoring in each of the remaining quarters, as the Canadian extended their lead in each frame.
Jerome’s double-double was efficiently earned in just over 21 minutes of play. Also setting the tone in a productive manner was Hailey Brown, who scored 14 points in 19 minutes of play.
Other key contributors to the Canadian’s success was Macaela Crone who score 10 points, Laeticia Amihere who scored 8 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Shaina Pellington, who collected 9 boards.
With the win, Canada moves on the to Gold Medal game against fellow Pool B foes, Brazil.
