Shay Colley and Brampton Warriors Excel Past Ottawa Capitals

On January 22, 2012, the Brampton Warriors defeated the Ottawa Capitals by a score of 64-44.

The regular season JUEL matchup saw the Capitals struggle to contain a speedy Shay Colley of the Warriors, who scored a game high 21 points.

The Warriors had an extremely short bench for this game, requiring all out play by the seven that were dressed. Shay Colley (5’8″‘ G, 2014) logged serious minutes against the Capitals, the majority of which she could be found being the primary ball carrier pushing the pace of play, creating for others or driving to the basket with purpose. This top prospect is certainly not one dimensional either, demonstrating quick hands, leading to a number of steals on the defensive end. The Capitals struggled so much with Colley that she managed to earn 16 Free Throw attempts, going 12-16 from the line in the game. Sade Iriah (6’1″, F, 2012) stepped up her presence inside, netting a strong 14 points for Brampton. Timely rebounding on her part also led to some much needed second-chance points.

Despite the final outcome in this game, it could be viewed as a tale of two halves. The First Half, saw both of these teams playing a closely contested game. As a matter of fact, the score was tied at 26 at Halftime. The Capitals’ Katherine Lemoine (6’2″, F, 2012) led her team in scoring in that First Half with 7 points, earning many of them because the Warriors struggled to contain her size, leading to Free Throw chances. The Second Half however, was all Warriors, who came out winning the Third Quarter 21-10. They further extended their lead in the Fourth by outscoring Ottawa 17-8.

One explanation for the difference between the two halves, was Capitals star Forward, Catherine Traer (6’1″, F, 2012). Traer, who managed to put up 3 First half points, was relegated to the bench for what seemed to be the whole Second Half. It is unclear exactly why Traer missed playing time, but it did not appear to be due to injury.

Also notably absent, but for the complete game, was the Warriors’ Kayla Davis (5’7″, G, 2013). She continued to nurse a sore ankle sustained during Brampton’s previous night’s win over the Scarborough Blues.

The Warriors, who managed to gain 42 trips to the free throw line against the Blues, were sent to the line 35 times in this game, while improving to 2-0 on the season. The loss brings the Capitals down to 1-1 after previously defeating the Advantage Titans.
