Transway-Nurse Pulls Off Ontario Cup FIVE-Peat
On May 6, 2012, Hamilton’s Transway-Nurse U19 rep basketball team has pulled off the rarest of feats. They won their Fifth consecutive Ontario Basketball Association (OBA), Ontario Cup, Division 1 title with their 69-59 win over the Advantage Titans in Waterloo, Ontario.
In the Championship game taking place at RIM Park, Transway-Nurse jumped out to a quick start and found themselves up 19-13 at the end of the First Quarter. The Advantage Titans then started off the Second Quarter with a run of their own, and eventually found themselves all squared up at 21 with Five minutes remaining in the Half. That would be the last time the Titans would draw level. Thanks to the quick release shooting of Christina Buttenham (5’10”, G/F, St Mary’s, 2014) which led to accurate completions from outside, and some timely team stops, Transway-Nurse went on an 8-0 run of their own then eventually went into Halftime up 33-25. From there, they never looked back, withstanding all that the Titans put up against them and answering blow for blow in this fast paced game.
Buttenham led all scorers with 27 points while teammates Kia Nurse (5’11”, G, Thomas More, 2014) and Hilary Hanaka (5’9″, G, St Mary’s, 2014) each scored 15. Lorraine Enabulele (6’2″, F, Notre Dame, 2014) led the Titans in scoring with 18 points, Cheyenne Creighton (6’1″, F, Pickering HS, 2014) poured in 16 points and Eternati Willock (6’2″, F, Pope John Paul, 2015) scored 14.
Throughout the tournament, Transway also picked up wins over (5)Peterborough Power (58-37), (8)Blessed Sacrament (64-41), (4)Milton Mad Dawgs (66-56) and (6)Transway #1 (57-42).
With the Finals win, Transway-Nurse finished a perfect season against Ontario Basketball Association opponents this season.
With many of their players still U16 eligible, Transway-Nurse figures to continue their dominance in Basketball in Ontario for years to come.
