Advantage Titans Roll to 8 Game Winning Streak; Baker Injured

A hotly contested game ends with the Advantage Titans coming away with a hard earned 63-54 victory over the Kitchener-Waterloo Lightning in JUEL action on March 3, 2012. But, it came at a cost.

Shanica Baker (5’10”, G/F, 2012), a major contributor to the Titans’ success this year, banged her head after falling down while fighting for a rebound and had to be carted off by ambulance officials.

Before her injury she had helped the Titans extend their 1 point lead halftime lead to a 42-34 margin in the Third Quarter with several key steals that were key to their momentum shift.

After the injury, Titans’ Brianna Thomas (Brianna Thomas, 5’11”, G/F, 2012) looked to help pick up the slack for the Durham Region team who came in riding a seven game winning streak. Thomas scored six of her team high 14 points in the final Quarter in order to seal the win. Thomas’ contributions along with the ball control of Wisconsin commit Dakota Whyte (5’8″, G, 2012), who was very influential in setting throughtout the whole game, helped the Titans maintain their share of a tie for second place in the JUEL overall standings.

The Lightning, who trailed for most of this game, but were never down by more than 10, couldn’t seem to gather the momentum required to secure the victory for themselves. They were led in scoring by Missouri commit, Michelle Hudyn (6’2″, F/C, 2012), who netted 16 points and Alex Klein (6’1″, F/C, 2012) who contributed 12.

Baker was released from hospital and even returned to the gym later on in the day, but will likely forego their next two games as a precaution.

The game took place in Brampton, Ontario, and moved the Titans to 8-1 on the season while the Lightning dropped to 6-3.
