On June 26, the Canadian U16 Womens team defeated Brazil by a score of 64-59 in order to complete the Group stage of the 2015 FIBA Americas with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Canadian team relied on their interior presence for their scoring, relying Kayla Shand’s 17 points and Hailey Brown’s 10 points as a significant factor in the win.

With the winner of the game to finish atop of the Group B standings, the Canadians had to overcome a deficit that saw them down 21-13.

Much to Canada’s credit, they worked their way back in the game by holding the Brazilians to 9 points in the second quarter, to trail 30-28 at half time.

In the third, the Canadians again held their opponents to 9 points, while putting up 19, as they took charge of the game.

A final 10-2 run over the game’s final 2.5 minutes helped seal the victory for the Canadians, who now look to play the host Mexicans in crossover semi-final play.

Shand added 7 rebounds to go with her point total, while Brown added 6 rebounds to go along with 3 blocked shots.

Other significant Canadian stats included:
9 points from Roxanne Makolo, and
8 points, 8 rebounds from Sarah Donovan
