On June 23, 2016, the Canadian U17s defeated Latvia in overtime by a score of 60-57 in the FIBA opening round of their FIBA World Championships in Zaragoza, Spain.

Laeticia Amihere posted a 18 point, 21 rebound statline that also included 7 blocks on 35 minutes of play.

Canada was also buoyed by key contributions from Hailey Brown who scored 10 points, including two free-throws late in the fourth quarter to force the game to overtime, and also scooped up 8 rebounds. Alyssa Jerome also scored 10 points as well in the winning effort.

The game was the first real test for the Canadians who were granted a default victory in their first scheduled matchup against Nigeria. They managed the victory in a contest where they came in ranked 4th in the world in the Youth Women’s category, competing against Latvia who despite a 10 position climb, were ranked 31st.
