Holy Cross Wins OFSAA 3A Bronze

On November 25, 2017, the Holy Cross Crusaders (Kingston, ON) defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Welland, ON) by a score of 43-40, to win the 2017 OFSSA 3A Bronze Medal, taking place in Guelph, ON.

The Crusaders were successful on the strength of Sydney Gauthier’s four 3-pointers leading to her 16 points. Maggie Besselink also added 16 points of her own as the two Crusaders made up the bulk of their team’s scoring.

The Fighting Irish were led in scoring by Jamira Rousseau who scored 13 and Olivia Turko three 3-pointers that made up her 9 points.

Rousseau’s final two points in the fourth quarter came from the Free Throw line to give her team a 40-38 lead. Besselink responded for the Crusaders, with a put back after collecting a rebound on her missed drive attempt with 1:30 remaining.

The Fighting Irish were not able to convert on their next possession, and fouled he Crusaders’ Laura Mallen who gave her Kingston school the lead for good after converting her two attempts from the line with just over a minute remaining and leading 42-40. Benton closed the scoring out for the game with her lone point from the charity stripe to get to the game’s final 43-40 score.
