Megan Smith Verbals Colonials For 2014
Megan Smith of Barrie, ON gave her verbal commitment to attend Robert Morris University of the NEC for the Fall of 2014.
“I can’t think about one negative thing about Robert Morris”, said an obviously elated Smith.
With the weight of having to make such a life altering decision, Smith is glad to now have the process of making a decision behind her, so that she can focus on refining her gifts in the classroom and on the court.
“It’s just a big relief off me shoulders to be honest”, Smith went on to say. “Now that I have made my decision, I can focus on developing my skills and my school work next year, and not be stressed out about making my decision.”
The solid 6’1” Forward, has a good inside and outside presence to her game. She posses a smooth shooting stroke beyond the perimeter that defenders have to step out to defend. And having grown at least an inch in the past year or so, can now cause even more fits in the paint with her back to the basket post up game, or her ‘get after it’ mentality while hunting down rebounds. The hard work she has put in to her training regiment, overseen by her Barrie Royal (JUEL) Head Coach and father, Todd Smith, has seen her become very strong and a tough player to establish position against.
It is those skills, plus a high energy motor on both ends of the floor, that she will be looking to bring to the Colonials next year.
“I bring a lot of energy and positivity to this team!” And, sacrificing her body for the sake of the team is just another way that she finds to contribute to her team’s successes, a part of her game play that has been a staple in her Eastview Wildcats high school team and Barrie Royal rep team careers to this point. “I love playing defense and getting charges, so I will definitely be bringing that to the team.”
In the Spring of 2011, Smith was a Discus Silver Medalist at OFSAA Track and Field Championships (Ontario Provincial High School Championships). That was around the same time her Barrie Royals were able to squeak out some tough wins in the Ontario Cup playoffs (rep), a moment she claims that stands out in her basketball career to this point.
She also cites winning a National Championship last summer as part of Team Ontario’s U17s in Fredericton, New Brunswick last summer as another moment that she won’t soon forget.
“We played Nova Scotia in the championship game”, recalled Smith. “It was their first time being in the Championship [Finals] in a long time, so we knew that they were going to give us everything they had. But fortunately for us, we played a great game and won by 18!”
“When I went to visit Robert Morris, everything just felt right about it”, she said glowingly. “The coaching staff is amazing and the girls were very nice and welcoming. The campus is beautiful and really reminds me of home!”
Smith and her entire family, who are regulars at her games, should be very proud of what she has been able to accomplish, and excited for what is in store.
Smith is thankful for the support that she has received to this point in her basketball career. She has had the support of her entire family, who are regulars at her games, and has a special thank you for the contributions of her father, who has guided her development since she first stepped on a basketball court.
“I would like to thank my family for always being so supportive ad always willing to drive me to the gym, practices, games, etc…” said an appreciative Smith. “Mostly, I would like to thank my dad. He has been my coach my whole life and has been there every step of the way making sure I make the best decisions for myself. I would not be where I am today without him.”
