Utes Secure Emily Potter for 2013
Emily has now signed her Letter of Intent to attend the University of Utah and play basketball for the Utes in the PAC-12.
In what is undoubtedly a tough situation to place on the shoulders of a 17-year old, asking them to make a decision at a major milestone that will affect them for the rest of their lives, Potter wasnt shy about what was going through her mind on this topic via twitter.
But she can now exhale that at least this hurdle is over and done.
“Oh man, I feel so stress free. I’m excited a lot about the decision I’ve made,” she said about finally getting this monkey off of her back. “I felt that Utah best matched my style of play. Just the way they use Ball Screens and other stuff that I had been exposed to over the summer with the Cadette Team, will for make an easier adjustment next year.”
Potter played a key role for the Canadian U17 squad that earned a Bronze Medal at the FIBA World Championships in Holland back in August. In their Final game Potter put up an impressive 17 points and 11 rebounds to help clinch the best ever showing by a Canadian team at this event. It was the international experience and playing for her country that she hopes to relive somewhere down the road, and her decision to play for Utah was factored in with that vision. Both in the way that she connected with Head Coach Anthony Levrets, and his impact on other the other three Canadians cuurently on the team including Taryn Wicijowski and Paige Crozon both from Saskatchewan and Michelle Plouffe of Alberta.
“The Head Coach there coaches a similar style of play of our Canadian National program. And, he’s had a big impact on the other Canadians, helping them do well with our National Program.”
Potter has just wrapped up doing doing ‘double athletic duty’. Her Glenlawn Lions Volleyball have just completed their season, losing in the Semi-Finals of their Provincial run while she was going through preseason training with her basketball team.
Her Lions basketball Head Coach, Bryan Kornberger, has had a big impact on her career thus far, and is among the many that she credits with gratitude.
“Without my friends and family’s help, I would have never made it this far. Coach Kornberger who I often work one-on-one with, has really helped me. I would also like to thank Basketball Manitoba for all their help…and the Provincial program as well. I would also like to thank the [Canadian] National Team program, especially Head Coach Carly Clarke for her help as well.”
So with this commitment, at least one of Potter’s big decisions is out of the way. Now, the debate for what she will Major in when she gets to Salt Lake City, Business or Science, rages on. I can’t wait to see what she tweets next.
