Venezuelans No Match For Canadian U16s

The Canadian U16 Womens team won game 2 of their FIBA Americas Championships by 31 over Venezuela on June 25, 2015 in Puebla, Mexico.

Taya Hanson led the Canadian team in scoring with 11 points, leading the five Canadians that scored 9 or more points.

It demonstrates just how balanced the Canadian strategy was in this game early in the tournament. A game that Canada had to be on their and not take their opponents too lightly.

“A great win today versus a scrappy Venezuela team in front of a great crowd,” said Team Canada Head Coach, Carly Clarke. “We maintained out composure and got the chance to work on some different things.”

The Canadian team looked to erase the memories of their slow start in Game 1 vs. Cuba. This time they jetted out to a 16-4 lead right from the opening tip as they looked to set the tone early and not spot their opponents any leverage early.

By the time the second half rolled around, Canada looked to protect their 38-23 halftime lead. They did so by holding the Venezuelans to 11 points in each of the third and fourth quarters, securing the 76-45 score line.

Hanson added four rebounds and four assists to her 11 points. The other leading point getters for Canada included Hailey Brown who score 10 and added 6 boards, Macaela Crone with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals and Shaina Pellington with 10 points.

Alyssa Jerome was also a solid contributor with a balanced stat sheet. She scored 9 points and kicked in 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocked shots and 2 steals.

The Canadians face Brazil for their third game of the tournament.
