Western University has secured Maddy Horst (5’6″, PG, Waterloo Oxford DSS, 2014) of Waterloo, ON to play for the Mustangs this Fall.

Horst is the kind of player that possesses a good amount of skill and brings diligence to the Point Guard position. She has a knack for doing the little things that sets her team up for positive results. As one of the few seniors on her KW Lightning rep team this JUEL season, she sees this as a great opportunity to put in some time leading the on and court product, while taking charge, enlightening and leading her teammates by example.

“I see this as an opportunity for me to be a leader both on and off the court,” said Horst about the things that will be expected of her this rep season. “We have a lot of talent and run a fast paced game which I feel is an advantage over most teams. It is definitly a learning experience for the younger players because of the high level of intensity that all teams bring to the court and that’s something that we have to transition into. We are a hard working team and are constantly improving our game. We will be competitive in Juel this season and I look forward to our accomplishments.”

In choosing Western, it proved to be a choice for Horst that she just could ignore. Location and ability to connect with the team and Coaching staff were all a part of the clinchers in her decision making.

“Brian [Cheng, Western Head Coach] and the coaching staff were all super encouraging and they made me feel really welcomed. When I went down for scrimmages over the summer the team was really supportive as well. Also, London is fairly close to my home so my family will be able to be a part of this experience too.”

Having also considered Queens and Laurier, Maddy is now glad that all of this decision making is over. Fully relieved that part of things is over, she can get back to working on her game and making sure her grades stay up to par.

“Its a tough decision for anyone to make, but once I made the decision, it feels like a weight has lifted off my shoulders. Now I am able to focus more on school work and on this years basketball season.”

Western University is currently the 3rd ranked team in the 16-team OUA, with an 11-4 record.
