Bailey’s Last Second Steal Seals Win For Trojans

On October 26, 2014, the pickering Trojans of Ajax, ON defeated Bill Crothers Colts Excellence, by a score of 56-53.

Tournament MVP, Rachel Woodburn led all scorers in the game with 21 points including 14 in the first half.

The Trojans jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, relying primarily on their speed and Guard play, before settling on a 32-24 halftime lead.

The Colts were not going down without a fight, mounting an after halftime comeback that more than wiped out the Trojan’s lead. A quick 10-0 run by the Colts, to grab a 34-32 lead, served notice that they were there to compete. They saw scoring by 6 different players in that third quarter, but the Trojans still found a way to keep pace in the seesaw battle that would go down to the last possession.

With the 17.1 seconds remaining in the clock, and the Trojans leading by 1, the Colts came out of their time out with the ball and on their baseline. They brought the ball up uncontested, then began to work the ball around the perimeter, looking to work the clock and set up for a ‘last shot’ attempt.

Sensing that this would be the case, Trojan Point Guard Chelayne Bailey, sprung into a passing lane to pick off a pass. She then out ran her defender and scooped up the loose ball and laid it in to seal the win.

Besides Woodburn’s 21 points, Bailey added 16 for the Trojans. The Colts’ Oksana Gouchie-Provencher led her team with 14 points
