Cadettes Advance to FIBA World Quarter-Finals

On August 22, 2012, the Canadian Cadette U17 Team advanced to the Quarter-Final round of the FIBA World Championships.

The World Championships, taking place in Amsterdam, Netherlands, has seen this Canadian squad go through their fair share of ups and downs en route to finishing Pool A with a 3-2 record. Canada started their first to games of inter-Pool action with losses to Italy (68-55) then to the U.S.A. (86-47). All this before putting together a three game winning streak against Belgium (50-45), Mali (77-42), and South Korea (74-61) to end the opening round.

“It was not pretty, but we found a way to get it done.  We are excited to be moving on the quarter-finals and have the opportunity to continually improve”, said Cadette Team Head Coach Carly Clarke.

After hand picking her team and formulating the team’s game plan, Coach Clarke and her troops appear to have the momentum they need going into the knock out stage of the tournament. Crucial team buy-in, coupled with success has this U18 team believing in their strategies.

“When we stayed calm and broke the pressure, we got easy baskets.  When we rushed, our decisions and execution were not good enough,” said Canadian forward, Emma Wolfram. “We are very excited to be through to the quarter-finals and we will be ready for any opponent as long as we stay composed and play as a team.”

Canada’s next match is against Pool B second place finishers and Hosts, Netherlands on August 24, 2012.
