JUEL 2012 Session 2: Sigurdson’s 26 Leads Venom To Win

Published

on

Mckenzie Sigurdson (5’7″, PG, 2013) scored 26 points to lead the Oakville Venom to a 76-63 win over the Tri-County Thunder on January 21, 2012.

Sigurdson did so by going 4 for 4 from the free-throw line and nailing four 3-pointers. Two of those 3-pointers came in the Fourth Quarter where she scored 10, contributed to her team’s 9-0 run to the win the game down the stretch. Sigurdson was able to use a good first step, above average ball control with her right, and mix in some off-speed drives leading to a good offensive output in the game.

The Venom also had a solid game from Saicha-Allen Grant (6’4″, F, 2012) who demonstrated that she can penetrate consistently from her setup on the perimeter. Her length and movement without the ball made life difficult for the Thunder defenders.  This was especially difficult because of the way she protected the ball in traffic and put herself into positions to get quality attempts at the basket. Her 18 points rounded out a solid 1-2 scoring punch along with Sigurdson that proved to be more than their competition could handle.

The Tri-County Thunder, despite their 19-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter, were unable to maintain their advantage. Katie Polischuk (6’1″, G, 2012), was a major contributor scoring 10 points in the opening frame and 16 points in first half, was held in check in the second half, limited to only 5 more for a total of 21 points in the losing cause.

The loss ended the exhibition schedule of each team with the Oakville Venom finishing with a 4-0 record and Tri-County falling to 3-1.
