St Patrick Fighting Irish Claim Bronze At OFSAA 4A

On November 23, 2013, the St Patrick’s Fighting Irish defeated the Pickering Trojans by a score of 56-35, to claim the OFSAA 4A Bronze Medal.

“I’m obviously so pleased for our three senior that are graduating, they just played great. All year they played great,” said Fighting Irish head coach, Ed Dragan.

After a slow start to a game that only saw 11 combined points in the first quarter, the sixth ranked Irish began to assert themselves. They saw their 8-3 end of first quarter score mushroom to a 30-16 lead by halftime.

Coach Dragan appeared to have solved the strategy of how to handle the fifth ranked Trojans, which was helped by his team’s hot shooting.

“We took a look at their speed and we tried to limit them to just one shot. We played a tough zone defense and held them to the one shot. And, I thought we shot very, very well ourselves, which certainly helped.”

Fighting Irish Senior, and Mount St Mary’s NCAA commit, Caroline Hummell, played a major role in the win for her team. After scoring 9 points in the second quarter to help give her team some separation, she followed it up by adding 7 more in the Third, en route to a game high 24 point performance.

“Caroline Hummel was rock solid for us,” said about his star player that they guided her team to a 43-31 advantage by the end of the third quarter en route to the win.

St Pats found a good time to hit to peak. There is talk all the time about teams needing to peak at the right time. In the previous three games in the provincial high school championships, the Sarnia, ON school had scored an average of 44 points.

“Today, I don’t know if we can shoot any better than we did. We played our best game today. If we had played them ten times, we might not of have the same result for eight other times.”

St Patrick’s Catholic School claimed the Bronze in this their first year of a merger with St Christopher, which closed due to low enrolment.
