Team Manitoba Wins 2014 U17 National Championships



Team Manitoba Win 2014 U17 National ChampionshipOn July 30, 2014, the Team Manitoba U17 defeated Team Quebec by a score of 61-50 to claim the 2014 Canadian Basketball U17 National Championship Gold Medal, which took place in Edmonton, AB.

The Finals, which took place at the University of Alberta, was ultimately dictated by action in the key. Manitoba took control of the boards in this game, outrebounding the Quebecers by a 51-39 margin. They also handily won the battle of points in the paint with 32, compared to the Silver Medalists’ 20.

Manitoba was led in scoring by three players, who each scored 14 points. Raizel Guinto was one of those players, along with Keylyn Filewich, who also added 7 rebounds. The third Manitoba player to score 14 points was Kyia Giles, who also collected 11 rebounds and nabbed 5 steals to round out a very respectable performance.

Quebec’s Juliette Gauthier scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds in the losing effort that was as close as a one point game with 1:30 remaining in the Fourth Quarter before Manitoba put the win on ice.

The finals, the culmination of the tournament that started back on July 25, featured many of the tournament’s top players as four players were later honored for their performances. Manitoba’s Jordan Tully was named Tournament MVP, while teammate Keylyn Filewich was named to the tournament’s 1st All-Star team. Quebec’s Myriam Leclerc was named to the 1st All-Star Team and Bliss Mutanda was given the nod to the tournament’s 2nd All-Star Team.
