Marauders Secure ’17 Commitments From Gates And Sharkey
Sarah Gates (3-stars, 5’9″, G, Newmarket HS/YNBA) and Clare Sharkey (3-stars, 6’2″, F, Newmarket HS/YNBA) have announced their intentions to attend McMaster University in Hamilton, ON in the Fall of 2017.
“Our priority in recruiting this year was to add size and rebounding presence, along with court sense and scoring ability,” explained McMaster Marauders’ Head Coach, Theresa Burns via school website. “We are getting all of that with Sarah and Clare, as well as being student-athletes that have the work ethic we look for and who are strong academically.”
In Gates, the Marauders are getting a Guard that had been flying under the radar. She was firing on all cylinders with a high ceiling but got derailed by injuries that spanned the 2015-2016 calendar years, prior to her return to action last summer. And, having not played on the circuits that may have yielded her greater visibility, many may not be aware of her big game ability. Gates is a scorer, and has proven that she has several tools she uses in order to do so. When she’s back to 100%, expect her to be able to drive to the hole, shoot the three and be strong enough to finish through contact.
Sharkey is a mobile big that has been developing her perimeter game. This past summer I had noticed that she has been able to extend her shooting range and be comfortable with the decisions that need to be made when she has the ball in her hands. Her size lends very well to the the CIS game and I can see her providing a solid inside presence throughout her university career.
Gates and Sharkey are very familiar with each other, being both from Newmarket, ON, both playing on the York North Avengers for several years, and both attending Newmarket High school.
