Becker, Russell To Represent Canada At ‘18 Commonwealth Games

Niyah Becker (5’11”, W, Utah commit, 2018) of Winnipeg , MB and Merissah Russell (6’1”, G, Capital Courts, 2020) of Ottawa, ON have each been selected to play on the 2018 Canadian National Senior Women’s Team that will participate in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 21st Commonwealth Games competition will take place in Gold Coast, Australia from April 4-15, 2018.

Besides the high school aged Becker and Russell, the Canadian Women’s team will also be made up of made up of NCAA, U Sports, CCAA and professional players that play in Europe. They will be grouped in Pool A for round-robin competition, along with Australia, England and Mozambique.

“We look forward to optimize this opportunity to further develop athletes in our women’s national team pool against top level competition as well as our staff,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance.

This will be the first time the Canadian Women will be participating in a Commonwealth Games. Their pool-mates Australia, won the first ever Women’s Basketball Gold medal of the competition, back in 2006.
