Alisha Roberts Makes Pepperdine Commitment
On November 8, 2011, Alisha Roberts (5’7″, G, 2012) made her decision that after graduation from York House School in Vancouver, BC. this spring, she will attend Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
Roberts, also considered attending University of Southern Utah in the United States, as well as Universities of BC and Victoria in addition to the defending CIS Champions, University of Windsor here in Canada.
This past summer, Roberts played with the U17 BC Provincial Team that competed in the Midnight Madness and Portland TraiBlazer Tournaments in the U.S., and earned a Silver medal in this year’s Canadian National Championships where she averaged 15ppg, 4asst and 4rbs. This school year, she will be looking to lead the York House Tigers, 2-time defending AA Provincial Champions, to a AAA Lower Mainland Championship in order to qualify for the AAA BC Championships. “At the end of the day it is about improving myself individually as a basketball player, being the best I can be and not worrying about that pressure.”
Roberts is a speedy Point Guard that has very good ball control and can consistenly find success with her drives to the basket. She is a charismatic Team Leader and is quite vocal in ensuring her team is all on the same page on both ends of the floor.
Understanding that strength, fitness and decision making are some of the key differences between the high school game and what she can expect with the Pepperdine Waves, Roberts has already begun targetting those areas in her training regiment. “To improve my strength I have been lifting weights with a trainer, and to improve my fitness I have been able to get on some very good cardio programs.” In improving her basketball I.Q. she maintains great relationships with her Provincial Coach, Shaun McGuinness and school Coach, Winston Brown.
As a strong foundation to the guidance she receives from the York House and Provincial team Coaches, Roberts’ basketball influence started and still continues right within her own household. “I am fortunate enough to have a father who played basketball and was quite good. He has taught me almost everything I know, so when I am looking to improve my skills he can always help.” Having her father’s impression on her game, as well as having two older sisters, Norma-Jean and Lisa both attend and suit up for the Laurentian Voyageurs of the CIS in Sudbury, ON were certainly pluses in moulding her love for the game.
“Growing up I have always had dreams of bring able to play basketball professionally”, remembers Roberts when asked of what her longer term asirpations might be. If that childhood dream doesn’t work out as planned, it appears as though she would like to stay involved in fields relating to the strengthening and conditioning of the body. “I always wanted to be a physiotherapist or a sports trainer. My major in order to become one of these is Sports Medicine or Human Kinetics.”
