Saint Francois Tops Saint Laurent For Juvenile Tournoi Express ‘Ship

On November 7, 2021, the Seminaire Saint-Francois Blizzard won the 2021 Tournoi Express-Juvenile Division Championship that took place in Montreal, QC.

Seminaire Saint-François (SSF), earned the tournament title by defeating the host St Laurent Express team by a score of 76-48.

SSF got out of the gate early in the Final by pushing out to a 30-16 lead after the first quarter and never really looked back. In that quarter, they were led in scoring by Guard Anaïs Levasseur’s 7 points. They also saw a couple of 3-pointers in that quarter from Kayla Couturier and also received 6 points from Juliette Gargya and Raphaëlle Gosselin.

SSF, a high school located in a suburb of Quebec City extended their lead over their Montreal high school rivals to tune of 38-20 early in the second quarter before the hosts began chipping away at the deficit.

Angelina Mbengo led the charge for the Express with 13 points in the quarter, followed by a solid contribution of 7 points by youngster, Jahda Denis. With the momentum seeming in the hosts favour, the halftime score was 47-36.

This is where the comeback began to derail, as SSF took back control of the game. The scoring slowed down for both teams in the second half and with a strong defensive effort, SSF only allowed one St Laurent player to score. And, by taking the momentum out of the game, and limiting their opponents to only 12 points in the final half, victory was secured for the Blizzard with a 76-48 final score.

The win signified a a key milestone in the development of the Seminaire Saint Francois program. In connecting with their Coach, Dave Levasseur, he made mention that if had been some 14 years since the last time his school had beaten St Laurent in any competition. And, while he cherishes the win, he knows that St Laurent will be gunning to redeem themselves in their next encounter.
