Crothers Wins Express Tournament Juvenile Championship
Mikaela Dodig led a balanced Bill Crothers X attack on route to a 68-56 victory over hosts St Laurent Express, earning them the Juvenile Championship of the 2015 St Laurent Tournament in Montreal, QC.
Dodig’s steady hand and decision making from the Point Guard position was added to her eleven point contribution, leading the Markham, ON team in scoring and ultimately to the Tournament Championship victory.
Dallyssa Huggins and Emma McCamus were the other Bill Crothers players scoring in double figures. Each of them had 10 point contributions and were among 9 Bill Crothers players notching points in the extremely close affair.
Taisha Exanor impressed the home crowd early and often for the Express. Exanor, who has really come into her own throughout the tournament, scored 17 or her team high 24 points (three 3-pointers) in the first half. The tightly fought first half saw the game knotted at 16 after the first quarter and had the Express take a slim 35-34 lead at the midway point.
Express’ Julie Elume had a strong second half with 9 points, mainly from her contribution in the paint. Her 17 total points may have easily been far greater if it not for the athleticism of Crothers’ Huggins, who was more than equal to the leaping ability and physicality of her Montreal foes.
McCamus benefitted from Dodig’s ball distribution, by finding various ways to get to the basket, helping Crothers to do just enough to outlast their worthy opponents. and take the title.
In this very entertaining Championship Final, the 12th annual edition, it came down to St Laurent’s athleticism and size vs Bill Crothers’ ball movement and steady shooting from the field.
