Kira Cornelissen Has Become A Brock Badger

Kira Cornelissen (6’0″, F, Tri-County JUEL, 2013), who attended East Elgin Secondary School in Aylmer, Ontario, will be attending Brock University of the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) and play as a Badger this coming Fall.

“I am so excited to have finally made my decision! It feels great. Now, I can focus on school and the JUEL season”, said Conelissen.

Named the Thames Valley Regional Athletics (TVRA) South Player of the Year for her efforts this past high school season, Cornelissen averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds the East Elgin Eagles. Her efforts and being the focal point of her team’s successes were rewarded with her  leading the Eagles to a 2012 TVRA South title.

In joining the  Brock Badgers, she will become a part of a team that has started their 2012-2013 campaign with a blazing 14-0 start, and was ranked as high as 7th nationally before a couple of recent setbacks. The successes Brock has had over the past couple of years did catch Cornelissen’s eye, but more important to her, was their style of play.  For her, the St Catharines, Ontario University’s team has a great roster and will be the best environment that she feels will help her game to grow.

“Brock being one of the top ranked basketball CIS teams is definitely a plus, but it wasn’t the deciding factor. Brock has some of the best post players in the country so being able to practice with them and learn from them will only make me a better basketball player. I also really like the different style of basketball they play and I think I can really benefit from it!”

The future Kinesiology Major has a solid size, and hopes that along with her skill she will be just what Brock needs to get all the way to the top of a tough OUA region.  Adding her to their lineup can only add depth to an already solid lineup.

Until she joins her University team, Conelissen will continue to perfect her game with her rep team, the Tri-County Thunder of the JUEL league.  Tri-County having established a number of telling results throughout the exhibition and early season games, will be a strong contender to win it all.  But along with looking to aid Tri-County past last season’s Semi-Final exit, Conelissen has a couple elements of her game that she will looking to sharpen up, to make herself a better all around player.

“Defense is a part of the game I will be concentrating on developing this season”, said the Forward with her longer term plan in check. “Brock is one of the best defensive teams in the country. There are going to be players that are bigger, faster and stronger than me so being able to play great defense will be key to me being able to contribute to the success of the team.”

Now that she has chosen Brock after Memorial, Laurier Waterloo and Queen’s were all on her list of other schools she considered attending, she now has her sights on going out as a JUEL league Champion.
