Kayla Davis Injured as Brampton Warriors Hold On For Win

Despite a early ankle injury to Kayla Davis, the Brampton Warriors were able to hold off the Scarborough Blues for a close 76-72 win.

Kayla Davis (5’7″, G, 2013) managed to score 9 First Quarter points before her injury, offense that helped her Warriors jump out to a 24-13 lead.  After the injury, the Blues continued to struggle to contain Cassandra Edwards (5’10”, G, 2013) and Shay Colley (5’8″, G, 2014) who both scored 6 points each in the Second Quarter.  Those contributions further extended the Brampton Warriors lead to 41-23 at Halftime, despite the team only connecting on 3 Field Goals in that second frame.

Early in the second half, the Warriors came out strong again and got the lead up to 18 points, but it was a lead that a short Warriors bench, which showed signs of wear, couldn’t maintain. The Blues started to turn the tide with big scores from Kadijah Holder (5’4″, G, 2012) and Billie Grant (5’9″, F, 2012).  Grant, who is at her best when aggressively tracking down rebounds and looking to completing tough baskets in the paint was doing just that while Holder nailed two of her four 3-pointers in the Third Quarter.

Blues Guard, Vaneil Simpson (5’5″, G, 2012) stepped up on both sides of the ball especially in the fourth quarter.  Simpson’s speed and ability to pressure the ball handler on defense led to several Warrior turnovers and on offense she was able to drive and score 11 of her 12 total points.

In the end however, Colley was able to do just enough to get her team to hang on for the ‘W’.  Colley, who appeared drained of all energy as she logged serious minutes in Davis’ absence, had the vast majority of plays run through her command.  She weathered the storm with maturity far beyond her years.  And along with the rest of her Warriors team, earned an all important positive start in this, their first game of the regular season.

After the game, Davis was seen walking extremely gingerly, idicating that she likely have to miss the Warriors’ game scheduled for the next day.

With the loss, the Blues start the JUEL season 0-1.
