Totems Overcome Deficit Back-to-Back BC AAA Title

On a March 2, 2019 the Semiahmoo Totems of Surrey, BC defeated the Walnut Grove Gators from Langley, BC by a score of 72 to 61 in order to claim the British Columbia Secondary Schools’ AAA provincial championships.

Faith Dut, scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half, leading a foursome that included Déjà Lee, Izzy Forsyth and Tara Wallack that provided all of their team’s scoring in the win, which took place in the Langley Centre.

The Gators gained momentum early, finishing the first quarter of the game on a 8-0 run. They were led in scoring in the opening frame by Jessica Wisotzki and Tavia Rowell who scored six each, and helped their team to a 15-9 lead.

Wisotzki continued to pace the Gators into the second, by adding 9 more, and helping her team increase their lead to 28-21 at halftime. The Totems’ Déjà Lee led her team offensively with 11 points in the half in response to the Gators’ surge, keeping them within striking distance.

Counting out of the halftime break however, the Totems came alive offensively. They outscored the Gators 25-16 in the third quarter, led by 11 points by Dut, and receiving 6 more each from Forsyth and Wallack.

Wisotzki scored 9 of her teams’ 16 points in the quarter, and saw their previous lead, turn into a two point deficit heading into the final quarter of the championship game.

Despite nine fourth quarter points from the Gators’ Tavia Rowell, the fourth quarter saw more of the same offensive production for the Totems who increased their lead to close the game out. However, eight more fourth quarter points came from Dut, along with 7 from Forsyth, 6 from Lee and 5 from Wallack helped to seal the 72-61 victory for Semiahmoo, from the foursome that did all the scoring for the champions.

The win successfully completed the Totems’ back to back championship title attempt, which saw them finish with a clean 40-0 record in provincial play.
